    Just wondering if anyone can recommend a particular wheeled stool for staff supporting children with mobility? we fund these for early years settings and for moving and handling purposes and have always bought the Smirthwaite one. Any experience of this one or others?

    Hi Rob thanks for this. I was unsure with the Jolly back whether there would be the temptation for staff to lean back as it has a back rest and it could tip? Also staff sometimes sit diagonally across the stools so they have a wide base with their feet (say whilst supporting a child in a walking frame)and if the back rest might get in the way?
    I have seen them in more general use though and seem to work well.

    As far as we know the chair was developed by an OT to support good posture, i.e. by maintaining contact with the back rest you cam maintain good posture (rather than leaning forwards as you push with the legs). It works well when moving alongside a child

    we’ve always gone for the Leckey square stool for early years Lucy… it’s more manoeuvrable than the Smirthwaite (better castors?)..the only issue is that it’s tested weight limit is only 12 stone. where this is an issue we go to the Patterson round stool which is rise and fall and tested to 18st (this is our default stool for secondaries). we do like the Jolly backs but only really in the classrooms…not just as handy for care use.

    My personal preference was for a round, hydraulic height adjustable stool rather than a square one (we had a fairly old version that had the pin adjustment on legs so difficult to get optimum posture for different staff and when moving it got ‘stuck’ far more than the other).

    We like the leacky round one the square one tends to over balance even when you sit on it diamond style also they have a good weight limit for larger staff

    Seers Medical designed a therapy stool for us which is fab. Costs a bit more than the Smirhtwaite Stool and Jolly Back Chair, but less than Leckey square stool.
    It is square with padded swivel seat, hyrdaulically height adjustable, sturdy, and moves fairly easily on castors while not running away with you. Ours doesn’t have the foot ring as it goes lower.
